NORTHERN KENYA
The flora and fauna of the Northern parts of Kenya varies dramatically from what is found in the Great Rift Valley. From the unique Northern species such as the Oryx, the highly endangered Grevy's Zebra or the gorgeous Reticulated Giraffe, and not to mention the landscapes, from the rolling grasslands of Lewa to the lush riverine forests of Meru or the dry arid scrublands of Samburru, the area is as diverse as it is beautiful!
SAMBURU
The Samburu National Park is one of the most Northern parks in Kenya (and yet is still 500km from the Ethiopian border!). The park is characterized by dramatic rock outcrops, forests of Doaum Palms and the muddy Ewaso River meandering slowly through the park.
WHY SAMBURU
THE EWASO NYIRO RIVER
The name is a local Samburu phrase meaning "Muddy River". The river cuts through the national park and, although it sometimes reduces to a trickle, is a vital source of water in the area. As a result all of the wildlife congregates around the river during the dry season.
THE NORTHERN SPECIALS
The Samburu National Park is one of the best places to see the "Northern Five". Unique mammals such as the gorgeous Reticulated Giraffe occur in significant numbers in the area and this is one of the best places in Kenya to see them.
THE SAMBURU TRIBE
The colourful and ever smiling Samburu people are one of the most photogenic tribes of Kenya. These semi-nomadic herders are one of the few tribes who live in harmony with the wildlife and it is not uncommon to see their herds of cattle and camels grazing side by side with the endangered Grevy's Zebra or herds of elephants.
LEWA
This former cattle ranch is the blueprint for wildlife conservancies in Kenya. The vast 62,000 acre privately owned and run protected area is home to significant numbers of elephant, both species of rhino and a number of other critically threatened species.
WHY LEWA?
THE ROLLING GRASSLANDS
The landscape of Lewa is very un-typical of Africa. The rolling grasslands almost give you the impression that you're in Scotland somewhere... until a lion walks into view! The landscape is a firm favourite with wildlife photographs as it adds a different perspective to the subject matter.
MOUNT KENYA
The views from Lewa towards the snow capped Mount Kenya, Africas second highest mountain, are breathtaking. Anyone keen on photographing the awe-inspiring mountain has a choice of forgrounds, from forests of fever trees to rocky outcrops, herds of white rhino or just rolling golden grasslands.
WHITE RHINOS
Lewa has a strong success story with the highly endangered White Rhinos. It is not uncommon to see a number of these lumbering through the landscape during a game drive. One can almost be forgiven for thinking that the species is now safe from poaching but don't be fooled - behind the scenes there is a mighty team protecting these and other species.
MERU
Arguably one of Kenyas best kept secrets, Meru is home to strong populations of lions, elephants and a vast assortment of birdlife. Its' grasslands are interspersed with crystal clear rivers, fed from the melting snows of Mount Kenya and thus its' landscape is very different to the surrounding parks and conservancies.
